Mystery Tree (IL)

We recently visited a State Park in Illinois. Our grandsons found apple like things on the ground on the path in the woods. They were kind of a light sagey green in color. We were wondering what they are. We were told they were sage apples but we are not sure.

Greetings Linda:

My first guess, without any additional information or pictures to go by, is Osage-orange (Maclura pomifera). The "sage apples" you describe are also known as "hedge apples" as another common name for Osage-orange is hedge apple or hedge.
