Norway Maple Trees (AL)

I want to line a long road in the woods with Norway maple trees, but have read how toxic the leaves are. I love the bright yellow color and wonder if there is another maple that would be better. Also, I've seen bare root trees that would fit my budget better since I'll require about 80 trees. How far apart should they be planted?

I'm not aware of any toxicity related to Norway Maple (Acer platanoides) leaves. I am, however, familiar with red, silver, and sugar maple toxicity (gallic acid) with equine.

The best recommendation I can possibly give to homeowners and landowners: please allow the planting site(s) and soil type(s) dictate tree selection rather than arbitrarily choosing/forcing a tree species to grow on your planting site. Believe me, you and your trees will be much happier if you match your trees to the site and soils. I'm very confident you will find multiple species that suit your specific needs and desires if you follow this friendly piece of advice.

Please contact your local extension office or your local state forestry office to assist you in choosing the best tree species based on your site/soils and based on your objectives.

Best of luck!
