I heard there was a tree sapling program through the state where you can buy less expensive trees. Can you advise? Thank you!

Greetings Sue:

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources' (DNR) no-cost seedling program is intended for forest landowners / landowners who are enrolled in an official state forest management or state wildlife program. DNR's no-cost seedling program is not intended for homeowners wishing to plant single trees.

Please contact your local city parks/forestry department to see if your municipality has a tree planting program.

Best of luck!

Hi Jay,

I had heard the same thing as Sue. What about a larger scale plant? The previous land owners planted a grove of maybe 200 mostly red pines that are suffering from a bark beetle infestation that we are working to stave off (you actually helped advise me on another post). I had actually thought the original pine sapplings were purchased from the extension office (this would have been decades ago) but I doubt there was enrollment in any sort of program. We were hoping to diversify the grove with trees that would help combat the spread and would serve as the return of some natives (red buds, for instance) that will do well among the pines and in the sandy soils. We would need quite a few trees, though. Were hoping to find inexpensive sapplings.
