Should tree stumps be removed? I have heard that there is a possibility of termite (or carpenter ant) investation if a stump is not removed after a tree is cut down.

Greetings Beverly:

There is no ecological reason to remove trees stumps, even in an ornamental setting. However, many homeowners feel compelled to remove stumps to facilitate tree replanting efforts.

Stump grinding, in my opinion, is the best and most expedient way to remove tree stumps. As far as carpenter ants--these insects can even inhabit live trees.
