Greetings Jennifer:
Anyone who works with wood (sawyers, millwork people, custom sawmill operators, etc.) will tell everyone they know to never drive nails, staples, screws, etc. into a tree. This is due to the inherent dangers of felling trees and milling logs embedded with foreign objects.
If you absolutely must place a nail in a tree, please use an aluminum nail. However, it is simply a better practice to affix a placard or tree id specimen tag to a small rot-resistant post placed near the base of the tree.
