When a tree begins to change colors in the fall, does it first start changing at the top? If yes, why?

Greetings Mark:

Fall color change can initiate anywhere on the tree: top, bottom, south-facing, west-facing, north-facing, or east-facing. Any walk through a park or a forest in autumn will validate the randomness of where fall color initiates within a given tree.
