Osage-orange for Streambank Stabilization (TN)

I am thinking about taking the apple and removing some seeds for planting in the spring. (They grow wild on one of our farms, Best fire wood and fence posts)

I have one creek bank on another farm that needs stabilization during the winter floods. I know they sport from the roots, but is this a good species for this purpose?

I know Sycamore and willow are also good for this.

If I do the osage orange, what are the best times to plant and should I start them in peat moss pots inside this winter?

Greetings Jim:

I would encourage you to speak with your local state forester with the Tennessee Division of Forestry as local knowledge and forestry expertise is almost always preferred. Your local forester may discourage you from planting a non-native, yet naturalized tree species for the purpose of stabilizing a stream bank.

Again, please contact your local TN Division of Forestry office for site-specific tree species recommendations and additional stabilization techniques.

Best of luck!
