Greetings Karren:

Cucumbertree (Magnolia acuminata) is Illinois' only true native magnolia. Yellow-poplar is in the same family, Magnoliaceae; however, it is not technically a magnolia. Yellow-poplar's binomial is Liriodendron tulipifera.

Correct -- bigleaf magnolia (Magnolia macrophylla) is not native to Illinois.
