Oak Tree Hasn't Broken Dormancy Yet (May 9)

We recently purchase a home with three large oak trees in the front yard. two of the trees have already started blooming new leaves, but the third tree still has most of the previous seasons leaves and as of yet we can not see any new growth on it. We havent even moved in yet and have never had oak trees in our yard so we are wondering if it may take longer for some oaks to bud, or is the tree more than likely dead. These trees look to be at least 50 yrs old.

Greetings Melissa:

Some trees (e.g., oak, hickory, and K. coffeetree) are just now starting to show signs of bud swell and bud break -- just need a little patience as it has been a relatively cool spring here in the central and northern part of Illinois.

This is perfectly normal for some oak species. I'm confident your oak tree's tardiness will become a faint memory within the next 7-14 days.
