Early Leaf Loss on Elm Trees

I have 5 elm trees in my yard and am unsure of the type of elm. In the last two or three days the leaves have fallen off. the leaves are dry but not yellow or brown but are still green. It looks like there is new leave buds on the new branch growth. I have noticed other trees in the area have the same problem and they are not all elms. some are cottonwood. Can you help me save my trees?
