I'm planning on planting shagbark hickory is a somewhat low-lying area; ground cover and mulch will be used. My supplier offers from bare root 1'-2' up to b&b 8' I'll be able to water these trees the first year. What do you recommend?

Greetings Dan:

If the planting site is truly low-lying, you may want to consider shellbark hickory (Carya laciniosa) or pecan (Carya illinoinensis) as shagbark hickory tends to like well-drained, upland sites.

Regardless, I believe hickory species are greatly under-utilized as ornamentals or shade trees!
