I would like to remove the buckthorn in a wood line in my yard, and plant some additional trees.I have some large trees, so need trees that will grow in shade.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Mary Ann:

I would encourage you to consider the following native tall shrubs/small trees: serviceberry (Amelanchier spp.); dogwood (Cornus spp.); eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis); viburnum (Viburnum spp.); ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius); or hazelnut (Corylus americana).

You mentioned shade; but I really don't know how much shade you are talking about? Are you underplanting beneath an existing closed-canopy forest or are you simply planting along a woodland edge?
