Sycamore Issue (IL)

We have a large old Sycamore that is loosing large sections of heavy thick bark about 1 ft. to 4 ft. off the ground. Under the bark are brown colored oval shaped spots with recessed holes in the center.. Can you ID the symptom and recommend a cure??
