Tree Planting after Stump Removal (IL)

I recently had a silver maple tree removed from my yard. The stump was ground up into wood chips. I want to plant a 3-clump white birch tree in the same spot where the maple was. Do I have to prepare the hole in a special way because of the wood chips that are now present? When would be the best time to plant the new tree? Please advise.

Thanks, Terri

Hi Terri:

With regard to white birch...I would suggest a different species due to white birch's chronic issues with bronze birch borer!

I'm an advocate of both spring and fall tree planting; however, I will always choose spring planting over fall planting if given the choice of planting seasons.
