Tree Selection for Small Garden (NY)

I would like to know what tree you would recommend for a smallish urban garden in Brooklyn, NY. A nursery suggested I plant a river birch. I also like white birch, but I was told that it is vulnerable to birch borer. What other trees would do well in this region, also considering that it is for a small garden? Thank you for any suggestions you can provide.
