Return to All About Black Walnut

Merchantability of 1st and 2nd Thinnings

I am planning on establishing a Black walnut plantation. I anticipate that there will be 1 to 3 thinnings before the trees begin to reach an 18 inch DBH. My question is that in the early thinnings, before the trees are marketable as saw logs, is there any market for them?

Hi James:

There is generally limited market potential for pre-merchantable black walnut stems removed during early thinning operations.

However, one can never know what a woodworker, woodturner, etc., can produce from poletimber size trees.
