Mystery Tree near Jackson Falls

I went for a walk in Jackson Falls with a friend and we saw a few of these trees but don't know what they are. None of them were very tall. And the trunk was a reddish color. The branches were all twisted and neat looking. The leaves are small red ovals. Can you tell me what kind of tree this is?

Hi Justine:

Hopefully you took some photos...you can email them to me at "jhayek at illinois dot edu"

My first guess, without photos, would be redbud (Cercis canadensis).

Best, Jay
