Stressed Black Walnut Yard Tree (NJ)

I too have a huge black walnut in my back yard. During hurricane sandy the roots were stressed as evidenced by the lawn stressed. It is June 5 and there are no buds, no leaves. I did have a few of the branches pruned after Sandy. The tree person mentioned that the tree is healthy. I read that stressed roots on a black walnut can cause stress to the tree. I have been told to wait it out and wait until next year to make a decision on whether to cut the tree down. What do you think?

Hi Judith:

I'm all for giving trees a chance to bounce back from stressful periods: excessive heat, drought, flooding, insect defoliation, etc.

Give the tree some TLC (water during periods of no precipitation & a little fertilizer) this summer -- it's a small investment for a landscape feature that adds significant value to your home!
