Hello I have recently purchased some land in nc illinois and it has a couple acres in pasture that i would like to plant to walnut trees. This is an excellent site w good soils. I would like to plant a type that has a possibility of maturing while im still around lol. Im 31 now. Should i plant a normal tree or hybrid. What would be the difference in maturity? Also do you know of a good supplier of trees? Thanks!

Hi Greg:

I would encourage you to speak with your local IDNR district forester as you begin this endeavor as they will be an excellent source of local information:

IDNR district forester map: http://web.extension.illinois.edu/forestry/pdf/tfb-nres-201-14.pdf

I don't doubt that some of the Purdue and Pence "select" black walnut grow faster and straighter; however, I'm just not sure the net benefits justify the costs, especially on average black walnut growing sites. Feel free to discuss that option with your local district forester in addition to sourcing seedlings for your tree planting project.

Best of luck!
