Planting Walnut on 10 acres in Merced, CA.

I have 10 acres of AG land in merced, CA, which has many almond orchards. I am thinking about planting black walnuts instead of going into almonds. The region is in zone 9. Will the Black walnut do well in this region since Almonds do quite well?

I realize this may be out of your region but I really enjoyed reading your Q&A blog. I think you are very, very well versed in NUTS. Do you think the 436 trees per acre be too much? Thank you!

Hi Lorene! Thanks for you walnut questions and your kind comments about our Ask a Forester forum.

Due to the nature of your request, I am going to insist that you contact your forestry experts in the state of California as they will be a much better source of Calfornia-specific forestry information as compared to a Midwestern forester like myself.

Best of luck!
