What does it mean when a tree "dies to the ground" and comes back in the Spring?

Hi Jo-Ann: Trees are perennial woody plants, and as such, their main stem typically does not dieback to the ground like perennial herbaceous plants. Young seedlings, and sometimes saplings, may dieback due to drought, flooding, fire, etc., and resprout from the root collar.
