Which trees in northern Illinois retain their leaves all winter. I know the bur oak does, but which other trees also hold leaves?

Greetings Eileen:

Many juvenile oak (Quercus) trees will retain their leaves during the dormant season -- this phenomenon is referred to as "marcescence."

However, oak is not alone with regard to this phenomenon: witch-hazel, American beech. eastern hophornbeam / ironwood, and American hornbeam / musclewood.
