Which conifer seedling plug species are best to plant on CRP ground for deer cover? Grasses get 2-3 ft tall during summer. I will be planting on slopes, bottom ground and high ground. Was thinking of red/white cedar or white pine. Also maybe firs or spruce?

Hi Neal:

It's extremely difficult for someone to offer tree species selection advice without knowing knowing specific site details: soil texture, drainage, pH, fertility, water table, slope, etc.

Therefore, it would behoove you to work with your local USDA-NRCS office and/or IDNR district forester to evaluate your property (soils/site) prior to making random species selection.

USDA-NRCS Office Locator: http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/wps/portal/nrcs/main/il/contact/local/

IDNR District Forestry Offices: http://dnr.state.il.us/conservation/forestry/Documents/DistrictForestersMap.pdf

Best of luck!
