Pruning Soft Maple Suckers (NY)

About 5 years ago i planted 50 one year old silver maple trees in a corner of an open field. I have noticed that a lot of them are growing up like a bush with many stems coming from the roots. Do i prune all the stems except the hardiest one or just let them grow and allow them to prune themselves naturally over the years??

Thanks for the advice

Hi Ted:

It depends on how much deer pressure you have, but I would go ahead and start selecting the straightest and most vigorous basal sprout and culling the rest.
