Removing Stumps Before Planting Trees?

Do I need to worry about disease or insects from stumps left from old trees if I plant new trees in the vicinity?

Depends...were the stumps the direct result of diseased tree removals? If yes, what kind of disease? If yes, what kind of tree(s)?
