All of the green walnut seed pods are filled with maggots this year....I have never noticed this before but I've never cracked them open and looked before. The maggots are in the black, mushy stuff between the green outer pod and the hard shell around the nut. The tree is massive and there are hundreds and hundreds of nuts this year and every single one has had maggots. What do you think?

Hi Cheri:

This is relatively common phenomenon (Walnut Husk Fly) and it is nothing to be too terribly concerned with in my opinion for non-commercial nut producers.

Best, Jay
