Mysterious Fruits Falling from Oak Tree?

I have large and beautiful oak trees in my yard they are healthy. At this time of year we usually get acorns falling from them but this year there is something much smaller falling from them resembling what looks like pine cone seeds - what comes from a mature pine cone...what are they? The black birds love them and come in flocks to eat them.

You've answered your own question: Pine seed does in fact come from mature pine cones. Do you have a pine tree growing adjacent to your oak trees?
