Planting Black Walnut in North Dakota

I will be inheriting land in the center portion of North Dakota. The land is poor for farming due to the acidity. However can I plant black walnut trees on it as a legacy to my children? My main concern is that it will get two cold. The average Hard frost dates give 142 days on average of no hard frost. from May 9 until Sept 28. The recommended time is 140 days of no frost. Is this pushing the envelope to much? Is it worth it? If it works the trees will be quite dense in 30-50 years.

Hi Stuart: North Dakota is not known as a black walnut producing state. Moreover, black walnut does best on near neutral soils -- not strongly acidic soils. I would strongly encourage you to contact a professional forester with the state of North Dakota for tree planting recommendations in that state. https://www.ag.ndsu.edu/ndfs Best, Jay
