If I wanted to buy some land with the intent to grow walnut trees. Could you discuss the pros and cons of buying hay land vs row crop land vs forest land containing a mix of black walnut and other native trees. Thanks for your help.

Hi Kyle:

An excellent web-based tool to help you identify poor-average-good-excellent black walnut planting sites is USDA's Web Soil Survey.

Web Soil Survey has a "Black Walnut Suitability" report that can be run on any tract of land in Missouri and Illinois.

Check it out for free here: http://websoilsurvey.sc.egov.usda.gov/App/HomePage.htm
