is there any connection between small acorns and a mild winter? In 2015 we had a mild winter and it was the first year in appx. 10years that our trees did not produce large acorns.

Hi Kathy:

I personally don't buy into the folklore that "large" acorns = cold winter and "small" across = mild winter.

I believe the number and size of acorns is simply a function of genetics, weather-related phenomena, last year's masting, vigor, age, carbohydrate reserves, nutrition, and mineral uptake.

Best, Jay
