Pruning a Maple Tree (IL)

4 terminals, tree is probably over 100 yrs. want to cut the tree in half. Cut off one of the main terminals that is reaching the house. What would be your advice on pruning and cutting this tree. Will it weaken the tree ? Will the tree become top heavy and fall ? Need to get tree off my roof. It is doing damage. Don't want to kill tree

Hi Eloise:

As a general rule, I simply cannot make informed tree health recommendations without visually inspecting the tree in question.

Therefore, your only option is to receive an on-site assessment by a certified arborist or a city arborist if you have one.
