Maple Tree Decline Issues

I have two very mature sugar maples in my yard. Last year one lost its leaves noticeably sooner than the other. This year it is way behind in growing leaves with some bare spots. I've lived here for thirty years and this has never happened before. Any thoughts?

Hi Anthony:

It's extremely difficult if not impossible to diagnose tree health issues over email or the phone. The first thing that comes to mind is verticillium wilt.

You can send a plant sample to the UI Plant Clinic to see if it indeed verticillium wilt:
