Black Walnut/Cherry Maturity (WI)

Hello, I was wondering if someone could give me some information on black walnut trees and black cherry trees. How many years would one need to wait from planting each type till there able to be sold for top dollar? 25 years? 40 years?(ballpark is fine) also what is the Avg. growth rate of each type per year?

Hi Ethan: Here in Illinois, you can expect economic maturity for black walnut and black cherry in 40-60 years. Minimum diameter for black walnut should be 20+ inches and min diameter for black cherry should be 16-18 inches. Growth rate will vary based on a variety of factors: management, stocking, soils, etc. Best, Jay
