Is Osage-orange a Protected Tree?

I been told that tree known as a hedge apple tree that grows here in Wood River IL. is a protect or historic tree and can't be cut down is this true

I've noticed that you have unintentionally or intentionally referred to the singular form of "tree" three times, so maybe you're actually referring to one individual tree, not the species as the whole, when asking your question.

If that is the case, then please contact a municipal leader in Wood River, IL, for clarification about this so-called historic Osage-orange tree.

Please note: The tree species Osage-orange (aka hedge) is neither a threatened or endangered plant species, nor is it even native to the state of Illinois. However, I can't speak to the historical significance of this particular tree in Wood River, IL.
