Is the walnut husk fly an aggressive, biting fly?I have several black walnut trees and for years we blamed deer flies for the burning welts.Acording to google images walnut husk flies and deer flies are very similar in appearance.I also have three farm ponds which are a good breeding area for deer flies. Thanks

Hi Richard:

Unfortunately, I don't have a great answer for you but I suspect the biting flies that you've blamed for years are indeed deer flies.

The damage from walnut husk flies is to nut crops.

Best, Jay
