Planting New Tree Over Removed Stump

[Post a Follow Up] [Post to this category]

I had a large oak tree, about 18 in in diameter removed and the stump ground last October. How long do I need to wait before I can plant a new tree in the same location. I want to plant an Eastern Hemlock in about the same spot.

Hi Paul:

If the stump was properly "ground" well below ground-level, all woods chips were removed from the hole, and new top soil was placed in the whole, then I see no reason why you couldn't go ahead and plant a new tree in the same location.

One of the main reasons I discourage planting a new tree in a recently removed ground stump location is that more often than not the contractor / homeowner does not go deep enough with grinding the stump, the ground wood chips are left in the hole, and no new top soil is placed into the hole.

Best of luck!
