Damage to Bur Oak Bark (IL)

My boxer pups decided to tear the park off of the lower third of the bur oak that I planted 2 years ago. Has the tree been damaged beyond repair or can it be saved?

Hi Janet:

Hmm...that doesn't sound good! Bark is obviously an important physical barrier that helps protect the tree and when that physical barrier is compromised, the tree can become stressed and subject to decline or even mortality.

Therefore, feel free to send some high-resolution digital photographs to your local UI Extension office for evaluation by their local horticulturist or Master Gardener volunteers:

Best of luck!
