Our Royal Rain Crabapple has Fire Blight. We were told that it can be replaced but NOT with another fruit type specimen (apple, crab, pear) is that true and why. It is on the East side of our house with lots of sun Thanks,

Hi Cam:

You can replace this diseased tree with a fireblight resistant variety. However, I would encourage you to consider alternatives such as our native serviceberries (Amelanchier spp.), eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis), dogwoods (Cornus spp.), and viburnums (Viburnum spp.).

Best of luck!
