We have a few acres of unused hilly pastureland, some of which is low and gets some water from a stream back up. We are thinking of planting trees for the next generation. We are thinking of oaks, but if that is a good choice what kind of oaks would you recommend for resale value?

Hi Susan:

Depending on soil drainage and pH, I would consider the following moderately flood tolerant oak species: bur oak, swamp white oak, swamp chestnut oak, Shumard oak, and cherrybark oak.

Overcup oak is a great choice for areas that receive a lot of flooding and the potential for standing water; however, this species has low timber value.

Best of luck!

The majority of the ground has excellent drainage. Only a small portion is prone to occasional flooding during spring rains. The ground is alkaline.
