Crown of Red Oak Tree Slowly Dying (GA)

We have a red oak in our front yard. The top of the tree has been dying a little more each year. I've read articles, where it could be oak wilt or root rot. Is there anything that can be done to save the tree? I was thinking about removing the dead portion of the tree. It's about 40 feet tall.

Hi Robert: These sort of questions are very difficult to answer without an in-person evaluation or assessment. That being said, the decline you are witnessing could be the result of biological or environmental factors. Therefore, your best bet is to contact your local state forestry agency or a certified arborist. Best of luck!
