Maple Trees Dying In Droves (IL)

All around my community (Decatur, IL) and in my own neighborhood/backyard, I’ve noticed over 50 or more maple trees either dead or beginning to die. They start dropping leaves from the crown and lose canopy over time until they drop all their leaves and die. I’ve observed this for over a year now. I’ve looked up maple diseases and none of them seem to fit the symptoms described—Especially with how prevalent this seems. I was wondering if the ash borer might be venturing into other trees as the Ash tree population declines? Or potentially pollution issue?

Hi Lindsay:

Well, that doesn't sound good at all !!!

Honestly, I would strongly encourage you to immediately reach out to your local Extension office to determine if one of their horticulturists or Master Gardener/Naturalist volunteers can conduct an on-site assessment of the situation.

Dewitt, Macon, and Piatt County Extension Office: https://extension.illinois.edu/dmp

Best of luck!
