my neighbor has a row of white pines about 30 years old , last year a storm took 2 of them out , resulting in the loss of privacy screen between our houses which are about 120 from each other. I planted a row of 6’ Green Giants about 16’ away from the older larger tree line . 13 trees all survived but 1, which was replaced last fall with another green giant that was dead with in 4 months. Why have all the other trees i planted survived while 2 in the same location died within a year? Any ideas? Would you plant a 3 rd tree in the same location ?

Frank, Without evaluating the site, it is hard to say exactly why two trees died in the same spot. It could be the soil conditions specific to that local spot is not conducive for white pine growth or a pathogen persisted in the soil that spread to the new tree. It could also simply be bad luck and nothing to do with the local conditions. Given that two trees in a row died at that some spot, I would consider planting something different.
