Pink Dogwood

I ordered two pink bareroot dogwoods. They are only 1 foot tall. I soaked them in water overnight before I planted them. However, how do I know they are alive? Should I snip the very ends of the little branches? Thanks

If they are alive, the stems should be somewhat flexible as you try to bend them a bit. Also, the buds, though small on a dogwood, should start to swell and have a light green coloration as the tree readies to break bud and start to open its leaves. Sometimes with bare root seedlings, it takes a while before the leaves come out so give it plenty of time before giving up on them.
