Vertical Split in Trunk

We have a large walnut tree in the yard that has a split down the middle of the trunk, all the way to the ground. The circumference of the tree is about 145", so it's a fairly old tree and we'd like to keep it around awhile longer if possible. Question: I've attempted to contact some local arborists in the area to look at it, but what is your gut feel for a tree this large? Is it possible to "repair" a tree like this and keep the split from getting worse, or would it just be easier to take the tree down now and avoid the expense of trying to save it?

Hi Diane, It is hard to have a gut feeling based upon just this description. Having an arborist take a close look at the tree is going to be the best way forward. In general, a big split doesn't necessarily mean the tree should be taken down, if there is little other damage. However, many times the split is due to wind torsion or other mechanical impact that may have also damaged the roots. Whether it can be saved or not is hard to determine without a close assessment.
