Why aren't there acorns this year?

Hi Susan, Acorn production varies a lot across the landscape. Here in Illinois, we have had a bumper crop of acorns this year, especially with the white oak species. Acorn production tends to be somewhat cyclical with abundant years in between relatively sparse years. If you are seeing absolutely zero acorn production, that may be climate-related. Late freezes can kill flowers before acorns are set or severe drought can cause the trees to abort the acorn crop to reduce energy loss and stress.
