Elm stump disposal

We had an Elm tree taken down last fall because it was showing signs of DED. The tree service removed most of the the wood but left a large pile of coursely chopped "mulch". Is it safe to leave the mulch where it lies or to move it elsewhere in the garden? If it isn't safe, how should we safely dispose of the wood chips?

The wood chips may harbor the Dutch Elm Disease pathogen in them so I would not use them to mulch anywhere near existing elm trees or in areas that you might want to plant an elm int he future. Other than that, they are safe to use. If you do want to plant an elm in the future, you should select a variety that has been bred for enhanced resistance to Dutch Elm Disease.
