Killing Honeylocust and stopping sprouts

Very helpful thread, thank you! I plan to remove a dying honey locust tree this year. It has already sent up one 2 foot sprout near the base of the tree. The tree is in the middle of a flower bed. Once I use something like Tordon RTU on the stump, is it possible to grind the stump to remove it? How long after application should I wait for stump grinding? Will poison remaining in broken up stump damage surrounding plants?

Tordon RTU will prevent sprouting of the honeylocust, but can remain in the soil for some time and may impact the flowers and other plants nearby. Other herbicides, such as triclopyr (Garlon and other brand names) will also prevent sprouting but do not move into the soil as readily. Either way, I would recommend waiting a few weeks to allow the herbicide to move into the root system before grinding the stump. Although, honey locust does not sprout from the roots, just the root collar so as long as the stump grinding is thorough and removes the entire root collar area, sprouting should not be an issue.
