I recently inherited 10 acres of land a portion of which has a stand of mature oak trees. I would like to increase the number of acres in oaks to provide habitat but don't know where or how to start. Can you offer any advice?

Whether or not you want to increase the number of oaks on your ten acres or whether you want to increase the acreage you have via additional oak plantings, your first point of contact should be your local Illinois Dept. of Natural Resources (IDNR) district forester http://web.extension.uiuc.edu/forestry/technical_assistance.html.

Based on your forestry goals and objectives, your district forester can recommend various state and federally sponsored conservation programs.

Please note that Illinois only has 14 district foresters. With +140,000 private forest landowners and 3.6 million acres of privately owned forest, your district forester will likely refer your request to a professional consulting forester.
