I just purchased a farm and it has hundreds of locust trees on it. What would be your suggestion to get rid of these undesireable trees. thanks, john

John,

As you probably know, honeylocust and black locust make great firewood since they both have high BTU values. Black locust is commonly used as untreated fence posts. Just watch out for the thorns, especially on the honeylocust!

Based on your objective of removing these undesirable trees, I would probably go the chainsaw and fell approach or the chainsaw and girdle approach. I suggest applying the herbicide picloram (Pathway or Tordon) to the freshly cut stump or girdle to ensure tree mortality and to prevent stump sprouting.

Listed below are two excellent publications from Ohio State Extension that explain how to effectively control undesirable woody vegetation

Good luck, Jay
