I have a aprox 4000 walnut trees in northwestern Illinois. the stand is 34 years old. I would like to harvest the walnuts. is there a time effective way to harvest them? The rows are 8 feet apart and are on a on a contour. when we planted them we used an old plow to make dead furrows and planet them in the dead furrows which were great for holding moisture and after 34 years the dead furrows are still there and would make any kind of mechanical raking difficult. Thanks

Thanks for the question Bruce - and I believe I have the perfect answer for you! Depending on how "clean" the rows are between trees, the "Bag-A-Nut" should do the trick. Many of our seed collectors in Illinois use a Bag-A-Nut to collect oak, hickory, and black walnut seed. This device is extremely efficient collecting seed in parks, cemeteries, parkways, etc.

Check them out at http://www.baganut.com

By the way, many of the Soil Water Conservation Districts in Illinois have their own Bag-A-Nuts for loan to county residents.

Happy seed collecting!
